Becoming a Ghoul in Fallout 76 - Everything You Need to Know!

Updated: May 22

If you’ve ever wanted to ditch your smooth skin and fully embrace the radioactive life, Fallout 76’s latest update brings one of the wildest transformations yet: becoming a full-on ghoul. This update doesn’t just change how your character looks—it completely overhauls your gameplay experience with new perks, meters, and some pretty intense side effects. Today I’m here to walk you through everything you need to know about ghoulification, from how to start the process to mastering your new abilities and managing the downsides that come with your glowing new form.

How to Ghoulify: The Leap of Faith Quest

Before you can revel in your new radioactive skin, you need to reach level 50. At this milestone, you’ll unlock a quest called Leap of Faith. This quest introduces you to the Revenant, a mysterious group of ghouls who have perfected the ghoulification process. They’ve set up camp far from the human settlements in a place called Radiant Hills.

Once you arrive, you’ll meet a scientist who offers to “help” you, which is a polite way of saying he hands you a sketchy inhaler and then blasts your body with radiation in a chamber. When you step out, say goodbye to your old human self—hello, glowing ghoul!

Customizing Your Ghoul Character

Becoming a ghoul isn’t just a cosmetic change; it fundamentally alters your gameplay. Your HUD receives two brand-new meters that you’ll need to keep a close eye on: the Glow Meter and the Feral Meter. These meters completely change how you manage your character’s health, abilities, and interactions in the world.

The Glow Meter: Fuel for Your Ghoul Abilities

The Glow Meter, located on the bottom left of your screen, tracks how much radiation is currently in your system. Think of it like a fuel tank for your ghoul powers. Keeping this meter topped up is one of the biggest challenges you’ll face. To increase your glow, you’ll need to:

  • Stand in toxic water

  • Hang around nuclear waste or Fisher sites

  • Drink toxic water, toxic goo, or glowing blood packs

The more glow you have, the stronger your ghoul perks become, giving you a real incentive to keep that meter filled.

Best Perk Cards to Boost Your Glow

To help maintain your glow, the first four perk cards you should prioritize are:

  1. Glowing Gut

: Increases the amount of RADS you get from food and drink.

  2. Glowing Hunter

: Ensures you have a steady supply of glowing blood.

  3. Breathe It In

: Reduces your radiation resistance, helping you absorb more radiation.

  4. Rad Specialist

: Increases your RAD intake from various sources.

These work together to keep your glow meter high, powering your ghoul perks effectively.

The Feral Meter: To Feral or Not to Feral?

The Feral Meter is the second meter you’ll find on the bottom right of your screen. It tracks how close you are to going full feral. The meter’s direction might seem counterintuitive at first: the lower the meter, the more feral you are. So if you want to avoid becoming feral, keep this bar high. Want to go full feral? Keep it low.

Non-Feral vs. Feral Ghoul Stats

Choosing whether to be non-feral or feral fundamentally changes your stats and playstyle:

  • Non-Feral Ghouls

gain more Strength, Endurance, and Health points. This playstyle is more balanced and survivable.

  • Feral Ghouls

lose Health, Endurance, Charisma, and AP, and suffer a 300% decrease in gun accuracy. However, they gain 150% more melee damage, making them brutal in close combat.

If you choose the feral route, you’ll unlock perk cards like Bone Shatterer, Feral Presence, Rad Reaver, and Feral Rage, all tailored to boost your melee prowess and feral abilities.

Managing the Feral Meter

Much like hunger or thirst, your feral meter gradually decreases over time, pushing you toward feral status. To replenish it, you can take chems. Any chem will work, but the update introduces a new chem called The Fix, which significantly restores your feral meter, helping you maintain more control over your ghoul state.

The Challenges of Being a Ghoul in Appalachia

Being a ghoul certainly comes with perks, but it also brings some serious social challenges. Many NPC factions despise ghouls, making your life tougher in Appalachia.

  • Brotherhood of Steel:

They outright hate ghouls and will attack you on sight.

  • Other factions

like The Foundation, Settlers, The Enclave, The Secret Service, and Crater Raiders won’t even let you enter their instance areas. They simply don’t trust glowing strangers.

This means you’ll be locked out of certain quest lines and areas, which can be frustrating if you want to experience everything the game has to offer.

The Disguise Workaround

Luckily, there’s a workaround. Head back to Radiant Hills and grab a disguise from JVO. This disguise lets you blend in and access those restricted areas, but it’s not without its downsides:

  • The disguise looks pretty atrocious—no cute options here.

  • Sprinting drains 50% more AP.

  • Your feral meter depletes 30% faster.

  • You move slightly slower overall.

  • If you carry too much weight, you’ll get super over-encumbered, making you waddle even slower.

To remove or reapply the disguise, you have to return to Radiant Hills and see JVO again, which can be a bit of a hassle.

Changing Back: Is Ghoul Life Permanent?

If you dive into the ghoul lifestyle and then regret it, there is good news: you can turn back into a human. However, this option is limited—each character can only switch back once. After that, if you want to become a ghoul again, you’ll have to pay real money for it in the Atomic Shop.

This choice makes your decision to ghoulify a meaningful one, so consider it carefully before taking the leap.

What’s Next? Perk Cards, Armor, and Weapons for Ghouls

In future guides, I’ll dive deeper into the 25+ new perk cards and 2 legendary perk cards specifically designed to enhance your ghoul abilities. I’ll also cover the best armor and weapons to complement your ghoul build, helping you dominate the wasteland in style.

For now, this update stands as one of the coolest and most immersive Fallout 76 experiences we’ve had. The ghoulification process is not just a cosmetic change—it’s a full gameplay overhaul that challenges you to adapt and thrive in new ways.

Final Thoughts: Will You Embrace the Ghoul Lifestyle?

So, what do you think? Are you ready to embrace the ghoul lifestyle and all the perks and pitfalls that come with it? Or are you going to stick to being smooth-skinned and avoid the radioactive glow?

Drop your thoughts in the comments below—I’d love to hear how you’re planning to approach this wild new update. Until then, stay safe out there in Appalachia, and may your glow meter always be full!
