Dune Awakening Review: My 70-Hour Journey Through Arrakis’ Sands


Hey there, fellow gamers and survival enthusiasts! After spending an intense 70 hours diving deep into the world of Dune Awakening, I’m here to share everything I’ve discovered about this ambitious survival MMO. From the stunning desert landscapes and gripping lore to the intricate politics and intense PvP battles, this game offers a sprawling experience that’s both massive and personal. So buckle up, because I’m about to take you on a journey through the deserts of Arrakis, where spice is life and survival is just the beginning.



Welcome to Arrakis: A Desert World Unlike Any Other


At first glance, you might expect Arrakis to be just endless dunes of sand, but Dune Awakening quickly shatters that stereotype. The world is beautifully crafted with a surprising amount of verticality, hidden oases, and forgotten ruins that beckon exploration. The lighting effects are particularly impressive, making every sunrise and sunset feel alive—even on low graphics settings.


What really hooked me was how often I found myself stopping to take in the view, right before some deadly creature reminded me I wasn’t just on a scenic tour. The environment is immersive, harsh, and breathtaking all at once.


The Lore: A Fresh Take on the Dune Universe


The story of Dune Awakening offers a wild twist on the classic Dune universe. You play as an agent, a prisoner en route to Arrakis with one mission: find the mysterious Fremen who have vanished without a trace.


In this alternate timeline, Paul Atreides was never born. Instead, his mother obeyed the Bene Gesserit and gave birth to a daughter. The war between House Atreides and House Harkonnen rages on, and you wake up stranded in the desert after a ship crash with nothing but your survival instincts and a burning curiosity about the fate of the Fremen.


Your journey is one of survival, discovery, and ultimately, awakening a sleeper within. The narrative is rich and full of political intrigue that sets the stage for your decisions later in the game.


Choosing Your Allegiance: House Atreides or House Harkonnen


One of the most defining choices in Dune Awakening is your loyalty. You cannot remain neutral; you must pledge allegiance to either House Atreides or House Harkonnen. This isn’t just a cosmetic choice—it fundamentally alters your gameplay experience.


  • House Atreides

    : Embodying honor, discipline, and diplomacy. If you’re someone who values teamwork and prefers a more honorable approach to conflict, this is your house.

  • House Harkonnen

    : Brutal, cunning, and ruthless. Perfect for players who thrive on aggressive politics, chaotic PvP, and a flair for villainy.


Once you pick a house, you begin climbing the ranks, unlocking exclusive weapons, armor, and building sets that reflect your faction’s style. The stakes are high because you can only betray your house once—and after that, you’re locked in forever. This adds weight and consequence to your decision, making every choice feel meaningful.


The Landsraad: Politics at the Heart of the Desert


Beyond individual battles and survival, Dune Awakening incorporates a sophisticated political system called the Landsraad, the assembly of noble houses. Your house—and eventually your guild—will participate in this political battlefield where every vote counts. Control over spice is important, but control over the vote is what really shifts power on Arrakis.


This political layer adds a fresh strategic dimension to the survival MMO genre, making it not just about combat and crafting but also about influence and diplomacy.


Combat That Rewards Skill and Strategy


Combat in Dune Awakening strikes a fantastic balance between challenge and fairness. You need to think quickly, manage stamina, time your dodges, and know when to retreat.

Enemies are smart and will punish careless mistakes, but they never feel unfair. When you die, it’s because you earned it, not because the game was cheap.


Weapons are responsive, movement is smooth, and the skill-based system truly rewards practice. One of my favorite features is the seamless weapon switching. Whether you prefer sniper rifles, shotguns, or swords, you can swap between them fluidly using hotkeys. Ammo management is simplified too—both light and heavy darts serve as ammo types, and crafting ammo is quick and grind-free.


Imperial Schools: Customize Your Training


Players can choose from five imperial schools to train in, each offering unique skill trees:

  • Bene Gesserit

    Masters of body and mind.

  • Troopers

    Trained infantry specialists.

  • Mentats

    Human computers with exceptional intellect.

  • Sword Masters

    Elite martial artists.

  • Planetologists

    Survival experts and ecological scholars.


You can mix and match skills from different trees or specialize deeply in a few, but not all. With a level cap of 200, no one becomes an unstoppable god, keeping gameplay balanced and competitive.


Exploring a Massive, Seamless World


The game’s world is impressively vast. The starting area, Haga Basin, spans 64 square kilometers—almost two and a half times larger than the Fallout 76 map—and it’s completely seamless with no loading screens between zones. The only loading screen you’ll see is when you die, which I totally didn’t experience… nope.


Haga Basin is split into seven distinct regions, each with unique biomes and enemies. In the preview, I explored South Hagga, controlled by scavengers, and Vermillious Gap, held by the Kirab. The other five regions unlock when the game launches on June 10th.


Each server, or “Siech” in Dune terms, supports 40 players concurrently. You can visit other sieches and team up with players there, but you can only build your base on one.


Kanly: The Rules of Engagement


Combat on Arrakis is governed by Kanley, a formal system dictating when and how the great houses can engage in warfare. Most of Hagga Basin is PvE, so you won’t be ambushed randomly while scavenging. I appreciate that everyone gets their own loot in PvE, eliminating the frustration of fighting over drops or ninja looting.


However, some zones allow PvP—especially shipwreck areas known as the War of Assassins. You’ll get warnings before entering these dangerous zones, so come prepared. The starter shipwreck in South Hagga is PvE-only, making it a perfect training ground before you dive into the real chaos.


Beyond Haga Basin: Social Hubs and the Deep Desert


Outside of Haga Basin, the game offers three major areas:

  • Arrakeen and Harkco

    The social hubs where players from different sieches gather. You can travel between these via trading posts, recruit guild members, or strike deals in cantinas.

  • The Deep Desert

    A massive 500 square kilometer PvP zone, pure mayhem. You’ll fly in on an ornithopter, and once inside, it’s all about territory control, survival, and securing more spice for your faction.


Deep Desert PvP isn’t full loot—you keep your equipped gear but risk losing resources, spice, and your pride. Plus, a weekly Coriola storm wipes the area clean, resetting all bases and locations. It’s a brutal but exciting endgame playground.


Co-op and Guilds: Power in Numbers


While you can tackle tough challenges with a small team of up to four, the real power lies in building a guild. Guilds can have up to 32 members, and that’s when things get serious. Guilds coordinate territory control, resource dominance, and political influence in the Landsraad.


Guild roles are diverse, letting players specialize and support each other:

  • Scavengers

    Gather resources and loot shipwrecks to keep the guild stocked.

  • Map Makers

    Track points of interest, enemy movements, and PvP hotspots.

  • Chefs

    Prepare food that boosts stats and survival chances in PvE and PvP.

  • Base Builders

    Design and defend guild bases.

  • PvP Specialists

    Lead combat operations to secure spice and territory.


As your guild grows, you can further divide responsibilities, creating a real community that thrives on cooperation and strategy.


Building Your Desert Fortress: Sub-fiefs Explained


Base building is a highlight in Dune Awakening. Bases are called “sub-fiefs” — a nod to the game’s political flavor. You can build up to three standard sub-fiefs, perfect for outposts or resource hubs, but the crown jewel is the advanced sub-fief. This main base is larger, more customizable, and a true symbol of your desert empire.


Using staking units, you can expand your sub-fief’s land and unlock more building space. Plus, you can assign co-owner permissions to guildmates, letting your crew build and defend together.


The building system is generous and player-friendly:

  • No frustrating build caps for floors or walls.

  • A clean and well-organized build menu.

  • Materials are easy to acquire, so building doesn’t feel like a second job.


One of the best features is the storage system. Crafting materials are pulled automatically from storage containers anywhere on your sub-fief, eliminating endless inventory micromanagement. The auto-deposit feature lets you quickly sort materials by type with a single key press—a small but satisfying quality-of-life improvement.


Storage units come with detailed permission settings, so you can control who accesses what. For those wary of guildmates accidentally grabbing your precious loot, this system will be a godsend.


Base Safety and Player-Friendly Design


Here’s something rare in survival MMOs: your base can’t be destroyed by NPCs or other players as long as your shield generator is powered and you pay your taxes. This means no waking up to a pile of rubble because you took a break or went offline.


You can keep your shield active for weeks, giving you the freedom to step away without worrying about losing progress. It’s a survival MMO that respects your time, which is a refreshing change.


Pricing and Business Model: No Pay-to-Win Here


Dune Awakening launches as a full 1.0 release on June 10th, with a deluxe edition offering early access starting June 5th. I’ll be hosting a beta key giveaway for the open beta weekend on May 9th for my Discord community.


The base game costs $49.99 and comes with no monthly subscriptions, no battle passes, and no pay-to-win microtransactions. All future updates, new zones, story content, and gameplay tweaks are included for free.


If you want cosmetic upgrades, you can purchase DLCs or season passes that bundle multiple cosmetic packs. But crucially, you cannot buy power—no XP boosts, no better gear, no convenience items that unbalance gameplay. This business model is a breath of fresh air in today’s gaming landscape.


Why Dune Awakening Stands Out


What impressed me most about Dune Awakening is the thoughtfulness behind every system. From the carefully balanced PvE and PvP to the seamless quality-of-life features, it’s clear the developers at Funcom built a game they genuinely love playing.

They respect the Dune source material and the player community, crafting a world that feels both expansive and intimate. This isn’t some rushed cash grab; it’s a carefully crafted survival MMO with real depth and passion.


The One Downside: PC-Only at Launch


My only real gripe is that, for now, Dune Awakening is available only on PC. Console players are missing out, which is a shame because this game is perfect for playing with friends across platforms.


The good news is that Xbox and PlayStation versions are already confirmed and coming soon. It’s just a matter of time before everyone can experience the harsh beauty and brutal politics of Arrakis.

I can see myself sinking thousands of hours into Dune Awakening. Whether you’re into PvE survival, PvP battles, guild politics, or building a desert empire, this game has something for you. It’s a smart, polished, and deeply engaging survival MMO that respects your time and your intelligence.
