Don't Get Caught Off Guard! Prep NOW for Fallout 76's Fishing Update!

Updated: May 22

Hey there, vault dwellers! If you're like me, you've probably been eagerly awaiting the new fishing update coming to Fallout 76. After spending a ton of time fishing over on the Public Test Server (PTS), I can honestly say it's way more fun than I ever expected. Fishing isn't just a simple mini-game—it’s packed with fresh fish to catch, exciting new camp items to collect, daily quests to complete, and brand-new challenges to tackle. The update is on the horizon, so now is the perfect time to prepare and make sure you’re ready to dive in fully equipped.

In this article, I’m going to walk you through everything you need to know to get your fishing outfit and gear ready. Because let’s face it, fish respect the drip. You don’t want to be standing out there on the toxic lake looking like a fish out of water in plain clothes. But don’t worry—there’s no need to go overboard. I’ll show you some easy and stylish ways to assemble your fishing gear before the update officially lands. So, grab your tackle box and let’s get started!

Why Dress for Fishing? The Importance of the Right Fit

Fishing in Fallout 76 isn’t just about catching fish—it’s about the vibe. When you’re out there casting your line on the toxic lakes or glowing waters of the wasteland, your outfit sets the tone. Sure, you could show up in your regular gear, but trust me, the right outfit adds immersion and fun to the whole experience.

And let’s be honest: the right look can even help you feel more confident while you’re fishing. Plus, in a world full of radiation and mutants, some outfits offer practical benefits like protection or stealth. So, whether you’re aiming for style, function, or a bit of both, here’s how to get your fishing drip ready.

Classic Fisherman’s Outfit: Where to Find It

First things first, the classic fisherman’s outfit is a great place to start if you want that iconic look without too much hassle. If you head north of Big Fred’s Barbecue Shack, you’ll find a rusty old pickup truck. This isn’t just a tetanus hazard—it’s where you can snag the classic fisherman’s outfit.

But what’s an outfit without a hat? For that, jump over to Ohio River Adventures and crack open the locker there. You’ll find the fisherman’s hat waiting for you. If you have some caps burning a hole in your pocket, Cunningham at the White Spring Mall also sells the fisherman’s hat, plus the fisherman’s overalls. Personally, I think the overalls look even better than the full outfit, but both are a little basic.

Step Up Your Game with Rare Outfits from Venderbot Responder

If you want to get really fancy and stand out on the lake, track down Venderbot Responder. You can find him by heading to the Charleston train station, crossing the bridge, then crossing back. When he’s there, he might have some rare gear like the gray fisherman’s overalls or the long shoreman outfit for sale.

Complete the look with the yellow slicker hat, also available from Cunningham (because he’s a legend), and you’ll look like a radioactive rubber ducky. Weird? Maybe. But it pairs perfectly with the new scuba tank backpack you’ll unlock after catching 250 fish.

Other Cool Outfit Options for Fishing

Fishing isn’t just about classic styles. There are some really cool alternative outfits you can wear depending on where you’re fishing or the vibe you want to give off. Here are some standout examples:

  • Centurion Helmet:

A super cool helmet you can get as a reward from a colossal problem quest. It’s a unique piece that adds some serious flair.

  • Cave Diver Suit:

You can obtain this from the “Supplying Demands” quest. It’s perfect for underwater exploration and fishing in darker environments.

  • Chinese Stealth Armor:

Ideal for fishing in the glowing waters of the nuke zones, this armor keeps you protected and sneaky. You can buy it at a discount from Manurva, and if you join my Discord, I’ll keep you updated on her inventory.

Hazmat Suits: Stylish and Practical

Of course, we can’t forget one of the most iconic looks in Fallout 76: the hazmat suit. Not only do these suits look stylish, but they also offer excellent protection in radioactive environments. Here’s a breakdown of some of the hazmat suits you can get:

  • Emit Mountain Hazmat Suit:

An ultra-rare drop from Radiation Rumble events.

  • Black Hazmat Suit & Swamp Camo Hazmat Suit:

Both are rare rewards from daily operations.

  • Vault Hazmat Suits:

The blue vault hazmat suit comes from the Vault 63 quest line, while the yellow version is a reward from Season 20.

  • Pink and Teal Hazmat Suits:

These colorful variants come from the Invaders from Beyond event.

As an extra bonus, you can wear these hazmat suits with glasses, adding a touch of personality to your look.

Weapons: Fashion Over Function

When it comes to weapons while fishing, you might think any gun will do. But if you really want to embrace the fishing vibe, nothing beats the harpoon gun. It’s not the most powerful weapon in the wasteland, but it’s thematic and fun to use.

There’s also the cursed harpoon gun, which you can sometimes get as a reward for killing Earl during a colossal problem. Is it a great weapon? No. Is it a good weapon? Still no. But it will eventually kill things, and when you’re fishing, it’s all about fashion over function.

Stock Up on Salt Before the Update

Here’s a little tip that has nothing to do with fashion but everything to do with preparation: after you catch all those fish, you’re going to need a ton of salt. Farming for salt can be tedious, so before the update drops, make sure you grab every salt shaker you come across. Trust me, your future self will thank you.

Final Thoughts: Get Ready to Cast Your Line

That just about covers everything you need to know to get ready for Fallout 76’s fishing update. From classic fisherman outfits to rare gear, stylish hazmat suits, thematic weapons, and even practical advice on farming salt, you’ll be set to hit the water looking great and ready for action.

Fishing in Fallout 76 is shaping up to be a surprisingly fun and immersive addition to the game. So when the update lands, you can relax, kick back, and just cast your line without worrying about your gear or preparation.

Thanks for reading and putting up with my silly fishing puns. I’ll catch you all out there in the wasteland!
